Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Hutchinson made 32 saves, Evander Kane scored two goals and the Winnipeg Jets beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2 on Tuesday night. Both of Kanes tallies came on the power play, including an empty-netter with less than a minute left to seal the win. Andrew Ladd scored the eventual game-winner for the Jets in the second period, just 31 seconds after Kanes first goal of the game. Bryan Little gave Winnipeg a 1-0 lead just nine seconds into the game with his seventh goal of the season, but a Jordan Leopold power-play goal for Columbus tied the game minutes later. Ryan Johansen added a goal for the Blue Jackets in the third period and Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves in the loss. Final Score: Ottawa 3, St. Louis 2 (SO) St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Alex Chiassons goal with 41 seconds left in the third period tied the game, and Bobby Ryan was the only player to score in the shootout of Ottawas 3-2 win over St. Louis. Senators goalie Robin Lehner made 27 saves in the win. Blues goalie Brian Elliott made 16 saves on 16 shots before leaving with a lower body injury, and he was relieved by Jake Allen, who made 15 saves on 17 shots. Ian Cole and Erik Condra scored their first goals of the season for St. Louis and Ottawa, respectively, and Alexander Steen scored a Blues power play goal in the second period. Final Score: Nashville 4, Los Angeles 3 (SO) Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - James Neal netted the lone goal in the shootout, as Nashville outlasted Los Angeles, 4-3, at Bridgestone Arena. None of the first 10 shooters were able to put the puck into the net. Neal opened up the sixth round by beating Martin Jones between the pads, and then Pekka Rinne closed off the lane along the ice to deny Dwight Kings chance and end the contest. Craig Smith, Ryan Ellis and Eric Nystrom tallied in regulation for the Predators, who have won two in a row and seven of their last nine. Rinne ended up with 18 saves. Jamie McBain, Marian Gaborik and Drew Doughty scored for the Kings, who have lost both contests in a three-game road trip which ends on Wednesday in Minnesota. Jones made 30 stops in helping the visitors gain a point. Final Score: Dallas 3, Edmonton 2 Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyler Seguin scored twice as the Dallas Stars held off the struggling Edmonton Oilers for a 3-2 victory on Tuesday. Rookie defenseman John Klingberg finished with a goal and an assist for the Stars, who won their third straight game. Kari Lehtonen turned aside 35 shots in the win. Boyd Gordon and Taylor Hall each lit the lamp for Edmonton, which received 30 saves from Viktor Fasth in defeat. Edmonton dropped its seventh consecutive game and fell to 0-11-1 against Western Conference opponents this season. The Oilers also dropped into 30th place in the NHL by virtue of one more regulation loss than the Blue Jackets and Sabres. All three teams have 14 points. Final Score: Colorado 4, Arizona 3 (OT) Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Danny Briere picked up the deciding goal, coming with 1:44 remaining in overtime, which allowed Colorado to rally from an early three-goal deficit and claim a 4-3 victory over Arizona on Tuesday. Briere had possession along the left-wing boards deep in the hosts zone and attempted a cross-ice pass to Zach Redmond, but the puck instead deflected off the active stick of Martin Hanzal and slid past Mike Smith to end the contest. Gabriel Landeskog added two goals and Matt Duchene tied the score for the Avalanche, the basement dwellers in the Central Division who have won four of their last five. Calvin Pickard earned the win in relief, stopping all 25 shots over the games final 52:23. Reto Berra started, but was pulled after allowing three goals on eight chances. Antoine Vermette, Michael Stone and Tobias Rieder lit the lamp for the Coyotes, losers of two straight and six of nine. Smith made 30 saves in defeat. Final Score: Vancouver 2, New Jersey 0 Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Miller halted 20 shots to post his second shutout of the season, and Vancouver shut down New Jersey, 2-0, at Rogers Arena on a night the hosts celebrated former defenseman and head coach Pat Quinn. Alex Burrows and Shawn Matthias supplied offense for the Canucks, who have won two in a row and eight of their last 10 (8-1-1). Quinn, an original member of the franchise, died on Monday at the age of 71. He played two seasons in Vancouver during his nine-year NHL career, then later served as head coach and general manager, racking up a 141-111-28 record and taking the club to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1994. Quinn took home the Jack Adams Trophy as the leagues top coach that year. Cory Schneider played well in defeat, making 34 saves for the Devils, who stumbled to their fourth loss in five and completed a western Canadian road swing at 1-2-1. Final Score: Anaheim 3, Calgary 2 Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Beleskey tallied a goal and an assist as the Anaheim Ducks used a 3-2 victory over Calgary to win their 19th straight home game against the Flames at Honda Center on Tuesday. Kyle Palmieri and Corey Perry also scored and Frederik Andersen made 32 saves for the Ducks, who have not lost at home against Calgary since Jan. 19, 2004. T.J. Brodie had a goal and an assist and Jiri Hudler lit the lamp for the Flames, who were coming off a 5-4 shootout win over New Jersey on Saturday. Jonas Hiller, who spent his first seven seasons between the pipes for the Ducks, allowed all three goals on 29 shots in his return to Anaheim. Bill Kirchiro Jersey Retro . SUNRISE, Fla. -- The Boston Bruins domination of the Florida Panthers continued. Well, the Bruins are beating just about everyone lately. Torey Krug scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and the Bruins won their season-high fifth straight with a 5-2 victory over the Panthers on Sunday. Chad Johnson made 20 saves, and Chris Kelly, Jarome Iginla, Patrice Bergeron and Andrej Meszaros also scored for Boston. Bergeron also had two assists for the Bruins, who are 7-0-3 during a 10-game stretch on the road, their longest such point streak since 2010-11. The Bruins have taken 14 of 16 from the Panthers, including eight straight by a combined 33-10 score. Boston is now in first place in the Eastern Conference. "Weve worked hard to get ourselves back at the top of the conference," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "By the looks of it, itll probably be a battle right until the end." Jimmy Hayes scored both goals for Florida, and Roberto Luongo stopped 37 shots. The Bruins broke a 1-1 tie on Krugs goal with 12:22 left the third. Krug took a pass from Brad Marchand in the slot and backhanded it past Luongo. "It seemed like their guys were a little bit tired and I thought I could jump up and beat a couple of guys," Krug said. "March made an unbelievable play and I was lucky enough to put it in." Three goals were scored in a span of 52 seconds later in the third, two by Boston. The Bruins stretched their lead to 3-1 on Bergerons goal with 6 seconds left on a power play. His one-timer went between Luongos pads at 11:21. "It was a big game for us. I think we played a solid road game and we came out with the two points," Bergeron said. The Panthers closed to 3-2 when Hayes found a loose puck in front and jammed in between Johnsons pads for his second goal at 11:42 for his first career multigoal game. The Bruins made it 4-2 on Iginlas goal 31 seconds later when his wrist shot went over Luongos shoulder at 12:13 for his 20th of the season and 550th career goal. Iginla moved into sole possession of 26th on the NHLs career goals list. Longtime Bruins forward John Bucyk is 25th. Kelly scored an empty-netter with 1:02 left. The Bruins beat the Panthers for the second time in six days, including a 4-1 loss on Tuesday in Boston. "Theyre still a benchmark," Panthers coach Peter Horachek said. "Theyre still the team that we have to gauge ourselves by. Thats a message to our guys, thats where we need to be." The Bruins tied it at 1 on a power-play goal by Meszaros. His slap shot from above the right circle got past Luongo at 9:58. It was the first goal Luongo gave up in nearly 90 minutes since rejoining the Panthers for Fridays 2-0 win against Buffalo. Meszaros made his Bruins debut after being acquired from Philadelphia last Wednesday. "It was good to go out there and play. Overall, I felt pretty good and the two points is huge," Meszaros said. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead on Hayes first goal at the 7-minute mark of the second. Nick Bjugstad shot from the right side and Johnson made the block, but Hayes grabbed the rebound and wristed it into the open net on the stick side. The Bruins went after Luongo from the start. He faced 27 shots in the first two periods, with at least three hitting the post, including a deflection off the skate of Panthers defenceman Brian Campbell early in the second that glanced off the iron. "You have to give (the Bruins) credit," Luongo said. "They came out hard in the third and they created some scoring chances. I would have liked to have made a few more saves there at least to keep it a one-goal game, but they have some good players there who can make some plays. "Things kind of fell apart a little bit in the third." Canadas Patrick Chan has drawn the 21st spot for Thursdays mens figure skating short program at the Sochi Olympics. Its an advantageous draw for Torontos Chan, as skaters prefer not to go early in the 30-man event. Four-time Olympic medallist Evgeni Plushenko drew the seventh spot, while medal favourites Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan and Spains Javier Fernandez drew 19th and 20th respectively. Plushenko helped Russia to the team gold by finishing second to Hanyu in the short program of the new competition, then winning the free skate. He won the 2006 gold medal and also has silvers from 2002 and 2010. CHICAGO -- Homer Bailey doesnt even need to be at his best to win at Wrigley Field. Bailey pitched six scoreless innings in a friendly ballpark for his first win of the season and Jay Bruce homered and doubled as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 8-2 on Sunday. "He hasnt been his normal dominant self, but his slider has gotten a lot better," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "Its a pitch that hes worked on for a long time. It seems like that pitch has really turned a corner and got him some big outs today." Bailey (1-1) struck out eight while allowing six hits and three walks. He came into the game with 8.16 ERA after signing a big extension in the off-season with Cincinnati. Zack Cozart hit a two-run homer for Cincinnati, which took two of three this weekend from the Cubs and has won 17 of 19 games at Wrigley Field. The Reds have won 10 straight when Bailey faces the Cubs. He is 7-0 in his last 10 outings against Chicago and 5-0 in his past six at Wrigley Field. Frisco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Just down the road from the FCS championship game, theres a certain playoff about to wrap up Monday night that surely has some catching up to do to whats been going on in the other half of Division I college football. Even Jerry Jones, whose Cowboys Stadium in Arlington will be hosting Ohio State and Oregon for the FBS championship game, might have to agree the 24-team playoffs on the FCS level have a little something on the four-team College Football Playoff. Even if North Dakota State keeps winning the FCS title, as it did Saturday with a 29-27 victory over Illinois State. The thrilling matchup of Missouri Valley Conference teams was an excellent advertisement for the playoff system. In the FCS, it dates to 1978. Well, yeah, I think a playoff could work, and we like what we have in FCS, NDSU coach Chris Klieman said. We have 24 teams and you get a true champion because youve got to win a number of games in consecutive weeks. But I dont know if theyll ever do that at that level of having how many teams, is it four, is it eight, so on. But no, its fun to have a true champion, and we crowned two champions today. We crowned a true Missouri Valley champion today and a national champion today. I think that with the playoff system, added Bison running back John Crockett, I think thats something that they really should look deeply into because at the end of the day when you go to school, you dont want to be just another player. You dont want to be just another school. I feel like at the end of a football season, its either youre the best or youre just amongst the rest. I feel like at the end of the day, if you want to hold your finger up and say, were the best team in the nation, hands down, playoffs, its perfect, because a bowl game cant -- like TCU, they played great, and other teams didnt play so well. I think that they really need to think about that because look at this, this is amazing, great atmosphere, and you know at the end of the day whos No. 1. Interestingly, Illinois State coach Brock Spack feels differently from his championship game brethren. He doesnt see a need for the FBS playoff to expand beyond four teams. Spack coached on the higher level of Division I for two decades and values the bowl games as well as the playoffs. The bowl scenario I think works for them, he said. I think the plus-one or whatever youre calling this is interesting. I think it seems like its a very good equation because I dont think they would have picked the two teams that theyre going to play Monday night. I really like the playoff scenario. Its unique to our level football. Ive really enjoyed it. I dont think for - this is just my opinion, that they should get away from the bowl scenario. I think thats unique to that level, and maybe four teams is the magic number. Im not in that position to make that decision or really have an opinion. It seems to be working out very well. Will they go to six or eight or whatever? I think youve got to be careful with that, particularly with these unprofessional players. Youre talking about academics, and were trying to reduce the risk of injury, and obviously the more games you play, the more you expose these guys to injury. FCS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME STORY North Dakota State (15-1) 29, Illinois State (13-2) 27 http://tinyurl.com/lfubljh GAME BALLS Offense - NDSU quarterback Carson Wentz might stand 6-foot-6, but he has both mobility and the ability to improvise under pressure. The championship games most outstanding player completed 15-of-22 pass attempts for 237 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 87 yards on 16 carries, including the game-winning touchdown as well as a fumble at the end of a 23-yard run in the first quarter. Defense - NDSUs starting trio of linebackers led their team in tackles as Carlton Littlejohn had eight solo tackles, Esley Thornton had six stops as well as a late-game interception to seal the win, and Nick DeLuca had six more tackles. For Illinois State, defensive tackle Brandon Prate had eight solo tackles, including a sack and two tackles for loss. Special Teams - So senior Adam Keller finally didnt convert a PAT after NDSU took the late 29-27 lead. He deserved a little slack despite the blocked kick as he had made 117 PATs in a row. He kicked two 41-yard field goals and a 24- yarder to reach an FCS single-season record 29 field goals, and he added two PATs in an 11-point game. IN MEMORIAL Illinois State players wore a red-and-white commemorative decal with the number 65 on their helmet to honor John Rodgers, the father of Eastern Washington senior All-America offensive tackle Jake Rodgers. John Rodgers suffered a heart attack in the stands during the FCS quarterfinal game between Illinois State and EWU on Dec. 13 and passed away two weeks later. Members of the Redbirds team found it difficult to celebrate after the win considering what happened during the game and wanted to express their support of both the Rodgers and EWU families. In another sign of sportsmanship, the NDSU and Illinois State players not involved in the pregame coin toss walked out on the field to shake hands with each other. It was a sign of mutual respect between two teams from the same conference. CONFERENCE SCOREBOARD The Missouri Valley set an FCS single-season record with its 10 playoff wins, two more than the previous high. The combined records of the 11 FCS conferences that participate in the playoffs: Missouri Valley (five qualifiers) - 10-4 (.714) CAA Football (four) - 4-4 (.500) Southland (three) - 3-3 (.500) Big South (two) - 2-2 (.500) Big Sky (three) - 2-3 (.400) Patriot (one) - 1-1 (.500) Southern (one) - 1-1 (.500) MEAC (one) - 0-1 (.000) Northeast (one) - 0-1 (.000) Pioneer (one) - 0-1 (.000) Ohio Valley (two) - 0-2 (.000) IN THE HUDDLE SCOREBOARD Championship Game Record: 1-0 (1.000) Season Record: 645-193 (.770) Joe Montana Super Bowl Jersey . Happ, the Toronto Blue Jays left-hander who has been on the disabled list since March 30, struck out six and walked two against the Pawtucket Red Sox. He threw 63 of his 90 pitches for strikes. Buffalo was held to six hits — two by Munenori Kawasaki — and Anthony Gose scored twice in a 7-4 loss. It was Happs second straight solid outing during his minor league assignment. He struck out five batters in a five-inning outing with single-A Dunedin on Saturday against Clearwater and allowed two runs on three hits. Back-to-back productive starts are a welcome development for Happ, who posted a 20.57 earned run average in four starts in spring training. Against Pawtucket, Happ picked up two strikeouts in the first, second and fourth innings. In the third, he allowed a hit and a walk with one out and eescaped damage by getting Ryan Lavarnway to ground into a double play.dddddddddddd. Happ yielded a leadoff homer in the fourth to Brandon Snyder, then followed up with back-to-back strikeouts. In the fifth, Happ had two runners on with one out and induced a bloop pop-out to Alex Hassan, but then was replaced by Marcus Walden, who got the final out to keep the game deadlocked at 1-1. Pawtucket struck for five runs in the seventh, all with two out, saddling Walden (0-1) with the loss. Happs back issues prevented him from earning the Blue Jays fifth-starter slot, which went to Dustin McGowan. Once Happ is healthy enough to head back to Toronto, its uncertain where the 31-year-old will be utilized. Despite starting 18 major league games last year, Happs 2013 season was marred by a skull fracture and sprained knee suffered in his seventh start. SAO PAULO, Brazil -- FIFA said Wednesday it is not considering changing kickoff times or adding mandatory cooling breaks during World Cup matches, despite being sued by Brazils players union because of health concerns. FIFA said it spent nearly two years analyzing starting times for the tournament in Brazil and always took into consideration the players health. The players federation filed a lawsuit this week to change kickoff times of the 24 matches scheduled to start at 1 p.m. local time (1600 GMT), saying players would be at risk because of intense heat and humidity in some venues. It said FIFA, at least, must introduce two-minute water breaks in each half during those matches. The players federation is asking for a temporary injunction against FIFA but theres no timetable on a ruling. "FIFAs medical team is always monitoring carefully all venues during any FIFA competition to protect the players health," footballs governing body said in a statement. "Cooling breaks will be considered on a match-by-match basis for the 64 matches. Official and mandatory cooling breaks will not be pre-established. Rather, climate conditions will be evaluated prior to each match by the FIFA venue medical officer." There were similar health concerns during the 1994 World Cup in the United states, when temperatures reached the mid-30s (Celsius) in some of the games. Extreme heat is also a problem for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with FIFA considering moving the tournament to winter to avoid the hot weather in the Gulf nation. FIFA said it already made the schedule changes it felt were needed in the Brazilian cities with the highest temperatures. It will be winter in Brazil during the World Cup, but it may be hot and humid in many of the 12 host cities, especially in the northeastern and northern regions. "One core aspect in defining the kickoff times was the very thorough analysis of the historical climate data in all venues," FIFA said. "Therefore, the venues with the highest average temperatures such as Manaus, Cuiaba and Fortaleza do not have any matches with 1 p.m. kickoff times during group stage." Seven matches had their kickoff times altered by FIFA last year. The players federation, known as Fenapaf, wants the changes based on local labour regulations and a study conducted by renowned Brazilian sports doctor Turibio Leite. The study was requested by Fenapaf and FIFPro, the international players union. "We have been trying to discuss this with FIFA for nearly two years and they wont even sit down to talk to us," federation president Rinaldo Martorelli told The Associated Press in a phone interview. "The only alternative was to seek legal action. We really hope that they make the changes in kickoff times, but if that doesnt happen, they need to at least make the cooling breaks mandatory." FIFPro did meet with FIFA last year to discuss the issue, although no direct action was taken at the time. FIFA said that defining the World Cup match schedule is a "complex process" that involves "detailed assessments" from experts in several areas, with players health the "highest priority." It said other considerations include travel logistics and the global television market. FIFPro last year accused FIFA of considering "the demands of TV companies of greater importance than the health and safety of the players." FIFA officially approved referees to implement cooling breaks in 2013, though water breaks were made during the final of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when Argentina beat Nigeria in grueling conditions at the Birds Nest. Portugal coach Paulo Bento on Monday announced the 23-man squad he will take to Brazil, with the main surprise being the choice of Braga midfielder Rafa, who has just one cap. Nani has had a disappointing year due to injuries and poor form, but Bento said the 27-year-old winger has shaken off the injuries that helped keep him sidelined. "Nani had a problem up until March but hes improved and hes been training normally since then," Bento said. He said he picked the 21-year-old Rafa because he can play either in midfield or attack. Rafa has previously played half a friendly game against Cameroon. Cristiano Ronaldo, who has recently had injury problems at Real Madrid, will be assessed by the Portuguese medical team after Saturdays Champions League final against Atletico Madrid in Lisbon, Bento said. Indianapolis, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Roosevelt Jones had 19 points, seven rebounds and seven assists to lead No. 15 Butler in a 93-51 win over Kennesaw State. Kelan Martin posted 17 points while Kellen Dunham gave 13 and Kameron Woods scored 11 for the Bulldogs (8-1), who have won four straight. Yonel Brown scored 14 points while Orlando Coleman and Delbert Love each gave 11 points for the Owls (3-7), who have lost three straight. Butler held a 14-5 lead four minutes in off a Jones jumper, and a 3-point play by Tyler Wideman later in the half staked the team to a 28-13 advantage. Holding a 52-27 lead going into the second half, the Bulldogs made it a 62-33 game off a Jones tip-in 4 1/2 minutes into the final stanza. Butler cruised the rest of the way for the easy victory. Cairo Santos Jersey Store .C. -- The Bobcats announced theyve signed centre Justin Hamilton to a 10-day contract. China Jerseys Store .com) - The St.INDIANAPOLIS -- Connor Cook was determined to shake things up in the Big Ten title game. By the end of the night, the sophomore quarterbacks teammates were bouncing up and down right along with him. No. 10 Michigan State rallied from a seven-point third-quarter deficit by scoring the final 17 points Saturday night to upset No. 2 Ohio State 34-24 and deny the Buckeyes a chance to play for the BCS national championship. Cook and the Spartans were more than happy to oblige. "I think we heard people talk bad about us all year. This wasnt the first week where we heard people say negative things about us as an offence or as a football team, Cook said after throwing a 9-yard TD pass with 11:41 left to give the Spartans a 27-24 lead. "I think we were underdogs in the majority of the games we played this year. It really didnt affect us." But the Spartans big win may prove costly in the leagues bigger picture. A win would have made No. 2 Ohio State (12-1) a virtual lock to play in its fourth BCS title game, and there was speculation the Spartans (12-1) might go to Pasadena anyway for the Rose Bowl, regardless of Saturday nights result. Instead, the Spartans are still likely to book their first Rose Bowl trip since the 1987 season, while the Buckeyes must wait until Sunday night to find out which bowl theyll play in -- and whether theyll play in a BCS game. Michigan States victory put Auburn, who the Buckeyes were rooting for last week against Alabama, in the title game against Florida State. To the Buckeyes, it was a deflating night. "You know its going to haunt all of us, I imagine, for a little while," Meyer said. "But thats part of the game." It was a game that almost defied logic. Ohio State came into the game with the nations longest winning streak (24), had not lost under Meyer in two seasons and had one of the nations most productive offences and underrated defences. Michigan State turned the conventional wisdom upside down by scoring the first 17 points. Then the nations stingiest defence gave up the next 24 points as Braxton Miller, Carlos Hyde & Co. took command. Cook responded to the challenge by driving the Spartans for a field goal, hooking up with the wide open Josiah Price in the flat of the end zone and then buurned 3 1/2 critical minutes on the clinching drive, capped by Jeremy Langfords sealing 26-yard TD run.dddddddddddd Cook finished 24 of 40 for a career-high 304 yards and three scores. Langford ran 24 times for 128 yards, becoming the first player this season to top 100 yards against the Buckeyes this season. For Michigan State, it was a milestone night. It won its 12th game for the first time in school history, completed a perfect conference season and extended its own winning streak to nine -- something it had not done since starting 1966 at 9-0. Most important, the players got to hold the roses for the first time since 1987 and the celebration began even before the final seconds ticked off the clock. "Were going to live this one for a while, live it for a month," coach Mark Dantonio said. "But its important that we finish what we started and that will end with a bowl game." Miller did what he could to rally the Buckeyes, finishing 8 of 21 for 101 yards with one touchdown pass. He also ran 21 times for 142 yards and two scores, while Carlos Hyde ran 18 times for 118 yards. Both joined the Buckeyes 3,000-yard club, becoming the seventh and eight players of the schools exclusive group. Starting right guard Marcus Hall, who Meyer said would not start after last weeks fight at Michigan, did not play. Meyer said he made that decision earlier this week. But it was the stinging loss that really hurt. "Things happen in games, dont really go your way," Miller said. "Youve got to come back and fix the mistakes." The Buckeyes did that late in the first half when they closed to 17-10 at halftime. Miller opened the second half with an 8-yard TD run to tie and then gave Ohio State the 24-17 lead with a 6-yard run with 5:36 left in the third. Michigan State answered with Michael Geigers 44-yard field goal, which barely dropped over the crossbar, to make it 24-20 and Cook hooked up with a wide-open Price in the flat to make it 27-24 before Langford sealed it with his TD run with 2:16 left, which prompted Dantonio to lobby for the Spartans to be playing in the title game Jan. 6. "I can tell you this, we beat the No. 2 team.," Dantonio said. "Were 12-1 so why not us? Why not us? Ill vote us No. 2." ' ' '

MONTREAL - Rene Bourque had just nine goals and 16 points in 63 regular season games, but the Canadiens forward has become a key cog in Montreals offence during the playoffs. A trade bait name brought up over and over again on local radio, web message boards and social media all season, Bourque netted his first career playoff hat trick in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final Tuesday, giving him eight goals and 11 points in 16 playoffs games and helping his team stave off elimination with a 7-4 victory over the New York Rangers. A while his sudden emergence as a scoring threat in the playoffs has surprised many, its nothing new to his teammates. Despite his regular season struggles, they never doubted the 62, 217-pound power forward would shine through when it mattered most. "Ive said it before and Ill say it again, hes got world class speed and a world class shot and its showing right now in the playoffs," said forward Max Pacioretty, who also chipped in Tuesday night with a goal and an assist. "Hes a bigger body and he plays a simple game and that suits him well in the playoffs. Its a great time for him to step up and he was huge tonight, he helped out a lot." After the Canadiens blew a 4-1 lead in the second period on Tuesday night, Bourque halted the Rangers comeback scoring his second goal of the game at 15:10 of the second period to make the score 5-4 and give Montreal a lead they wouldnt relinquish. Bourque then added another goal at 6:33 of the third period to complete the hat trick and help the Canadiens avoid elimination for the third time in these Stanley Cup playoffs. Montreal will try to repeat the feat for a fourth time in Game 6 in New York on Thursday and force a Game 7 back in Montreal on Saturday. "Even going back to last year, he just loves this time of year," said forward Brendan Gallagher. "Hes leading by example again. For him to go out there and score not only three goals but very timely goals was big. Anytime you give up the lead like that and can come right back and score thats big. Thats what clutch guys do at this time of year, they score timely goals." Since being acquired from Calgary two years ago in a trade that saw popular scorer Michael Cammalleri go the other way, many have doubted Bourques role on this team. But not Gallagher and his teammates. They saw a hard-working character player that could come up big when it mattered most. "You just gotta understand the character he has," Gallagher explained. "Hes big. Hes a guy that we rely on. He showed up and thats what we expect from him. Hes a competitor. He loves the atmosphere and he loves the opportunity we have right now and thats kind of expected from him." Michel Therrien was also thrilled with Bourques performance. "He played a great game; he was a force out there," the Canadiens head coach said. "On the forecheck, he took the man. He was moving his feet. He was going hard to the map mat. Hes a very good scorer, so definitely that was a great performance by him." The always quite and humble Bourque wasnt about to take all the credit though. "Everybody was ready for this game," he said after the game. "We knew the situation. We got a big power-play goal early and a few others. "It was just a see-saw battle back and forth. (Dale) Weise made a great play to me. I called for the puck and somehow it got through. It was nice to get in there." The pucks have gotten through for Bourque just one less time than they did in the regular season and the Canadiens are hoping his clutch run continues as they try to come back from what is now a one-game deficit. The CFL expansion team announced Friday its mascot will go by the handle of "Big Joe Mufferaw." The Redblacks received a number of online suggestions from fans, most of whom wanted the CFL clubs mascot named after late Ottawa storyteller Bernie Bedores character. "Our fans spoke and we listened," said Jeff Hunt, the president of the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, which owns the Redblacks. "We heard that fans loved the look of our mascot and hundreds said he had to be Big Joe Mufferaw. "We like that name too because it reminds us of our citys past and fits so well into the branding of our football team." Hunt said he connected with Bedoress family about using the name.dddddddddddd Bedore wrote several books aimed at youngsters that illustrated the tall-tale lumberjacking exploits of Big Joe Mufferaw. "Were delighted to continue dads legacy through a new series of books for kids," said Judy Bedore, the late storytellers daughter. "This initiative will bring Big Joe Mufferaw and the history of the lumber industry in our region into the hearts and minds of a new generation of young people for years to come." Big Joe Mufferaw was also immortalized in a famous song from Canadian country-folk legend Stompin Tom Connors. NEW YORK -- California Chrome failed in his bid to win the first Triple Crown in 36 years on Saturday, losing the Belmont Stakes to long shot Tonalist and leaving his owner to complain others took "the cowards way out" by skipping the first two legs of the Triple Crown. Before tens of thousands hoping to see history, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner finished in a dead-heat for fourth with Wicked Strong. California Chromes loss extended the longest drought without a Triple Crown champion. California Chrome co-owner Steve Coburn was bitter about horses skipping the first two legs and then stealing the Belmont. Six of the last eight Belmont winners did just that. "Thats the cowards way out," he said. "Its not fair to these horses that have been in the game since day one. If you dont make enough points to get into the Kentucky Derby, you cant run in the other two races. Its all or nothing." Coburn thought the other 10 horses ganged up on California Chrome, who was second early, dropped to fourth and then fifth before dead-heating for fourth. Photos after the race showed Chrome also had a bloody gash on his right front foot, a minor injury that may have hurt his chances. Coburn voiced a similar complaint after the Preakness, saying only the 20 horses that run in the Kentucky Derby should be eligible to compete in the other two legs. He also believed that horses skipping the Preakness should not be allowed to return in the Belmont. Coburn had been in a festive mood earlier in the day, waving his cream-colored cowboy hat to fans and signing items they tossed to him in his box seat. But the mood turned ugly after the race. Three tough races in five weeks proved too demanding for California Chrome, who was sent off as the heavy 4-5 favourite. Affirmed remains the most recent Triple Crown winner in 1978. The raucous crowd of 102,199 -- the third-largest in Belmont history -- was silenced when it became obvious that California Chrome lacked his usual punch in the stretch. Jockey Victor Espinoza realized long before then that his chestnut colt wasnt up to the grueling 1 1/2-mile trip around the tracks sweeping turns. "As soon as he came out of the gate, he wasnt the same," Espinoza said. Alan Sherman, the son and assistant to trainer Art Sherman, agreed. "When Victor started to squeeze on him, he didnt respond," he said. "He was wore out, I think." Once the official result was posted, fans sat in stunned silence before heading to the exits. Penny Chenery, the 92-year-old owner of 1973 Triple Crown champion Secretariat, had been ready to welcome a new member to the exclusive club. She and others with ties to previous Triple Crown winners came to watch what they hoped would be California Chromes big day. "Im very disappointed that we didnt have a Triple Crown winner, but Im happy for the winners," she said. Tonalist, the fifth wagering choice at 9-1 odds, was a fresh and rested horse making his debut on the Triple Crown trail. He last ran and won the Peter Pan Stakes over the same Belmont dirt on May 10. Tonalist beat Commissioner, another newcomer to the Triple Crown, by a head. Those two horses finished in the same order in the Peter Pan. Tonalist ran the distance in 2:28.52 and paid $20.40, $9.60 and $7. Commissioner returned $23.20 and $13.20, while Medal Count was another length back in third and paid $13.20 to show. Samraat was sixth, followed by General a Rod, Matterhorn, Commanding Curve, Matuszak and Ride On Curlin. California Chrome broke quickly but was pressed immediately by Commissioner and General a Rod. Espinoza eased California Chrome back into third along the rail. Approaching the final turn, California Chrome was manoeuvred to the outside. He angled four-wide turning for home, just to the outside of Tonalist, who was close to the pace the entire race. Espinoza started whipping left-handed in the lane but California Chrome had no response. "I thought he was gaining ground, but he didnt have it in him, apparently," Coburn said. Tonalist joined the growing list of Triple Crown spoilers, making California Chrome the 12th horse since Affirmed to lose his Triple try in the Belmont, the longest race in the series. In 2012, Ill Have Another won the first two legs, but was scratched the day before the Belmont with a career-ending tendon injury. "The Triple Crown itself, obviously its tough," winning trainer Christophe Clement said. "If it would be easier to do it, then it would mean nothing." Tonalist was making just his fifth career start. "We actually thought he finished second, but we got lucky, he won," Clement said. "It was great." California Chromes rise from a humble pedigree and his working-stiff owners resonated with sports fans who rarely take an interest in horse racing. His owners spent $8,000 on a mare they bred to a stallion for $2,500, and were called "dumb asses" by a trainer for buying a mare who gave no indication that she could produce a standout offspring who could run fast. Conditions seemed aligned for the Triple Crown drought to end. California Chrome thrived during his three-week stay at Belmont Park. His chestnut coat gleamed and he gained weight after the Preakness on May 17. His owners, trainer and jockey oozed confidence. But this fairy tale didnt have a happy ending. Espinoza lost his second chance at a Triple Crown. He was aboard War Emblem in 2002, when that colt stumbled at the start of the Belmont and lost all chance. "The horse tried, thats all I can ask for. He took me on the ride of my life, Ill always have that in my heart for that horse," trainer Art Sherman said. Coburn, who with Perry Martin formed Dumb Ass Partners to race their one-horse stable, had vowed that California Chrome "would go down in history." It just wasnt the kind they wanted to make. BOSTON -- Jacoby Ellsbury wasted little time reminding the Red Sox how he used to help them win. He did it for the Yankees and Masahiro Tanaka on Tuesday night. The boos had barely subsided when Ellsbury tripled leading off the game, his first as an opponent at Fenway Park. Then in the bottom of the first he stole a hit from Boston leadoff hitter Grady Sizemore with a sliding catch in left-centre field as his cap flew off. New York won 9-3 and Ellsbury, who spent seven seasons with the Red Sox before signing a $153 million, seven-year contract with the Yankees, was a major contributor. "You want to go out there and put on a good performance," said Ellsbury, who received a mixed reception. "It was nice to get a triple right off the bat, just allow us to score right from the get-go." The two-run double in the fifth also was pretty satisfying. It gave the Yankees a 7-2 lead one inning after David Ortiz and Mike Napoli hit back-to-back homers for the Red Sox. That was a "big hit," New York manager Joe Girardi said. "They had climbed a little bit closer to get it to 4-2. I thought he played extremely well." Tanaka (3-0) allowed two runs on seven hits in 7 1-3 innings with seven strikeouts and no walks. His 35 strikeouts in his first four major league starts set a team record and hes walked just two batters in 29 1-3 innings. But this was his first game at Fenway. "I understand its a stadium rich in tradition," Tanaka said through a translator. "Going up on the mound, I did feel that." Jon Lester (2-3) struggled after four outstanding outings, allowing seven runs in 4 2-3 innings. "They put some good swings on him," Boston manager John Farrell said. "Then when they mishit some balls, they found some holes." There were more boos than cheers for Ellsbury from the crowd that contained a sizeable amount of Yankees fans when he stepped in as the first batter. With an 0-2 count, he drove the ball about five feet from the top of the centre field wall. It was ruled a triple after a spectator reached out and interfered with it. Ellsbury scored on a single by Derek Jeter, starting the Yankees toward their seventh win in nine games. Jeter took second on a passed ball and took third when catcher A.J. Pierzynski threw into centre field. Carlos Beltran singled in Jeter, making it 2-0 before an out was recorded. After the bottom of the first, a video tribute of Ellsburys highlights was shown on the centre field screen.dddddddddddd He smiled and waved from the visiting dugout. "For them to just take a moment to have some cheers, it was nice," said Ellsbury, a big part of Bostons World Series title last year. The Yankees added two runs in the third on consecutive doubles by Alfonso Soriano, Mark Teixeira and Brian McCann. The Red Sox cut the lead in half on the homers by Ortiz, his fourth of the season, and Napoli, his fifth, ending Tanakas scoreless streak at 16 1-3 innings. Lester nearly escaped a jam in the fifth before an error by first baseman Napoli led to four unearned runs and an 8-2 Yankees lead. "Weve given some extra outs," Farrell said. "At this level, when you do that, youre asking for trouble." Teixeira walked and took second on a McCanns single. Lester struck out the next two batters then got Brian Roberts to hit a liner to Napoli. But the ball went off his glove and into right field, allowing Teixeira to score. Ellsbury then doubled in two runs. That was all for Lester as Chris Capuano came in and gave up Jeters RBI single. The Yankees made it 9-2 in the eighth on Beltrans fifth homer. It came off Edward Mujica, his teammate last season when the St. Louis Cardinals went to the World Series but lost in six games to Boston. Xander Bogaerts, who wears the No. 2 Ellsbury had with Boston, doubled in a run for the Red Sox in the ninth. On Wednesday night, Ellsbury can show one asset, his base stealing, that he didnt display Tuesday. "With a triple and a double and the situation in the game, I really didnt have an opportunity," he said, "but well see." BOSTON -- Asked if the Canadiens dodged a bullet in Game 1 against the Bruins, Montreal coach Michel Therrien opted for a different view of his teams 4-3 double-overtime win. "The good news is we found a way to win. Thats the most important thing," he told reporters Friday. "And we all know were capable of being better. And we will (be). "But (goaltender) Carey Price was outstanding. He was tough to beat (Thursday night)." Despite the win, Therriens message was that his team has to be better in Game 2 of the second-round playoff series Saturday. Boston outshot Montreal 51-33 Thursday, climbing back from a 2-0 hole to force overtime. Price turned the surging Bruins back again and again, giving his team a chance to win. P.K. Subban obliged with the double-overtime winner. "We played against the best team in the league and you need goaltending," Therrien said. "Certainly Carey Price gave us that type of performance. He was phenomenal. Its good for the confidence of the team. "Like I said, we know as a team we could be better. We liked the way we finished the year. We liked the way we played the first round." Boston coach Claude Julien dismissed the idea that Price might get into his players heads. "Theres a lot of good goaltenders in this league," he said. "Weve got one (in Tuukka Rask). "And we basically still got three goals on him last night ... Weve just got to play our game and the chances are there. Im going to go back to what I said earlier -- bury those great opportunities. We played well, but there were a lot of open nets that we missed, there was a lot of chances that if we would have shot them properly, instead of panicking maybe, we get ourselves a goal." Therrien thought his team showed the rust of not having played since the April 22 completion of the Tampa Bay Lightning sweep. But there were positives. The Montreal power play finally clicked, going 2-for-3 on the night with both goals coming from Subban. And the Canadiens, who managed 43 hits combined in the two games in Tampa, dished out 45 Thursday night in Boston. Still the Bruins outhit them 56-45 on the night. Asked about having to play a 12:30 p.m. ET start Saturday, Therrien laughed and said, "We had no choice." The Canadiens had a team meeting Friday and most of the players hit the gym. Therrien mixed up his lines during Game 1, with perhaps only the trio of Lars Eller, Brian Gionta and Rene Bourque standing out. "We tried to use them as much as we can in good situations, to help the team win." said Therrien. "But thats part of coaching," he added. "Sometimes you can not be afraid to make some changes." Thomas Vanek, who plays on the top line with David Desharnais and Max Pacioretty, has somehow become the poster boy for the need for improvement. "Theres a few players on our team who I believe need to step up our game regarding (Thursday night) and hes one of them," Therrien said of Vanek. "Im not here to mention any names but as a group weve got to be better and we will. "Im not worried and were glad that weve got Thomas Vanek in our lineup because he can be a dangerous guy to the other teams." Vanek, who was minus-one and did not have a shot in Game 1, did not shy away from the issue. "Last night as a line, even as a team, I dont think we played well. I think Carey carried us the whole game and then stole us the game. Subbie (Subban) stepped up and had a big goal. I think were not ignorant (of the need) for us being better as a line and myself as an individual." China Jerseys .
